"Do you know who the first grad student was? Aristotle (Plato was his prof).
Do you know how long he was in graduate school? Eighteen years.
Do you know how well he did? He invented all the sciences."
- Dierdre McCloskey, Distinguished Professor of Economics, History, English, and Communication at the University of Illinois Chicago

I am a relapsed academic. I fell off the wagon 5 years ago by leaving a professional, well-paying job and am pursuing my PhD in Mass Communication to the detriment of my financial future and sanity. On the plus side, I may eventually be a doctor. But not the kind who helps people.

I like media fandom a lot. My main fandom currently is A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series by George R.R. Martin, (now also the HBO series Game of Thrones, based off of said book series) but only the parts of fandom which are relatively free of assholes, misogynists, racists, perverts (the bad kind, not the good kind) and gross fanboys. It's a small part of the fandom, but I am happy there.

This journal is, at this time, largely friends-only. (It's also not active past one or two posts a month, though that may change again at any time.) Comment to the friends-only post or any public post to be added.

First to fall over when the atmosphere is less than perfect
Your sensibilities are shaken by the slightest defect
You live your life like a canary in a coal mine
You get so dizzy even walking in a straight line

You say you want to spend the winter in Firenza
You're so afraid to catch a dose of influenza
You live your life like a canary in a coal mine
You get so dizzy even walking in a straight line

Now if I tell you that you suffer from delusions
You pay your analyst to reach the same conclusions
You live your life like a canary in a coal mine
You get so dizzy even walking in a straight line

Canary in a coal mine
Canary in a coal mine
Canary in a coal mine

-- "Canary In a Coal Mine", The Police

"Today, the practice of using a canary in a coal mine has become part of coal mining lore, but the ideology behind it has become a popular expression. The phrase living like a canary in a coal mine often refers to serving as a warning to others. The actual canary in a coal mine had little control over its fate, but it continued to sing anyway. In one sense, living like a canary in a coal mine indicates a willingness to experience life's dangers without compromise."
